Student Solo Project! (2022)
'Edible Woman' originally written by Margaret Atwood is an inspired student solo project that I completed during my third year of university. The inspiration behind this piece was derived from Atwood's exploration of loss of the female self and symbolic cannibalism. This project was inspired by significant events in the book where our protagonist, Marian, envisions herself in horror as a mere prey being hunted by her to-be fiancé Peter.
As you can see from the photos, the creative process of this project was pretty messy. It was fascinating to investigate the morbid scenes in Atwood's book. These photos are inspired by a scene where Marian fears that her boyfriend sees her as an animal to be hunted, rather than a human being. Using satirical perspective, this transformed Marian's fearful imaginings into an almost ridiculous caricature. The comedic affect this had on the audience was incredible!
